New York City is one of the earth’s most fascinating urban centers. Teeming with history, entertainment, folklore and the voices of authors long passed from this life, it enjoys an almost mythical status as one of the world’s most iconic destinations.
Considering the dizzying array of things to do and see there, we’ve put together this brief list of great sites to consider in New York City. Your tour group has a limited time to squeeze in as much Big Apple adventure as possible, so these suggestions may help you narrow your itinerary down a bit.
The Brooklyn Bridge
The enormous architectural legacy of NYC is impressively expressed in this example from 1883. It’s much more than just a way to get across the water. It’s an icon in its own right, in a city of icons.
At the time it was built, the Brooklyn Bridge was the first structure to span the East River and the longest suspension bridge in the world, at the time of its construction. At more than a mile long, a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge is an experience like no other, offering views of Lower Manhattan and taking in the Statue of Liberty.
The Empire State Building
Considered by many to be the quintessential New York City landmark, the Empire State Building’s soaring 1,454 feet once made it the tallest building in the city.
Completed in 1931, after 11 months of arduous labor, the building is a prime exemplar of the Art Deco style of design and architecture. This is especially evident in the building’s lobby, restored in 2009 to its original splendor.
The Theater District and Broadway
Visited by 13 million people from all over the world each year, NYC’s internationally-renowned Theater District is home to Broadway, the street that launched a thousand theatrical careers.
The Great White Way hosts world class entertainment, much of it driven by the star power of international names from the silver screen. A visit to the Theater District and Broadway is sure to set aspiring performing artists’ imaginations ablaze.
Central Park
Rhapsodized in odes to its beauty in song, poetry, story and film, Central Park is the first landscaped park to be created in the United States of America.
An enormous 843 acres, Central Park was planned to provide city dwellers with an escape from the rigors of urban life. Its wooded areas take you to a place you can’t possibly believe exists as part of a bustling metropolis, while its open spaces and formal Mall present a pastoral face of this amazing city.
